Welcome to Lakeside Block of the Month
Month 1
Congratulations on receiving Month 1 of your Lakeside Quilt. I hope you are all enjoying the beauty of all the fabrics and imagining your journey as we progress through the next few months.
Last month I suggested that you put all of your pieces as you cut them in bags with a label on each so you can quickly identify each fabric and piece. I have personally found over the years of doing quilts with many pieces that this makes it easier to identify the colors etc and because this quilt has many fabrics that are similar, there is no mistake when trying to identify what you need. I also label and bag each step as I go along because some blocks have many components and if I leave, I know exactly where I am. Once you start using this technique of bags and labelling, you will wonder how you ever did without it.
I found no errors in the instructions and found the pictures to be invaluable when putting the various components together. Draw each of the templates as given and for those of you who do not like templates, don’t worry, this is the only time they are used. Template Z is a circle that is appliqued to the center of the finished block. On the store sample, I used the fabric that I was told to use. However, if you would like to change the fabric used, do so. If you go to the shop and look at the quilt on the wall, I have placed squares of dark blue, light green and white there so you can see the difference that center circle creates if you change it up. Ask the girls to show you and they will be happy to do so.
One question that is asked all the time about Batiks is if there is a right or a wrong side. Technically there is, but it is very difficult to see. I did research and found that if you look carefully, maybe the design on the fabric is sharper on one side then the other. I looked at each side and picked the side that spoke to me, meaning, maybe one side was darker or lighter in parts of the design and I liked it better. You look, you choose what you want to do.
I will be available at the shop the last Friday of the month for you to come and see me and ask any questions that you may have, or help you if you have any difficulties. I am at the shop other times as well so feel free to call or just drop by, we are there to help.
Thanks for time and happy piecing.
