Beginner Quilter: Beginner Quilter - February 2023

Overview 6/8 week Beginner’s Quilting Class

First Class : Selecting fabric choices and discussion about contrast of color.

Discussion of various quilting terms, needle selection, thread and any questions that you may have.

No machines are required for this class

Second Class: Bring your machine and manual, all of your selected fabrics, cutting board, thread, and rotary cutter.

You will straighten the fabric and make your first cuts of all the material ready to make blocks. We will discuss the first block and the cutting will begin.

Block cutting and sewing: We will continue putting the blocks together depending on the rate of your sewing and homework. We should be able to accomplish 2 blocks per week.

Layering up of the top and the backing and batting should be about the 6th lesson. By then you should have all of your blocks completed and assembled and be ready for the sashing. As soon as the top is finished, the layering can be accomplished. You will require either curved quilters pins or spray adhesive during the layering process as it is quicker that hand basting the layers together.

By week 7, you will have the quilt top assembled for show and share and can begin to quilt with a walking foot. The last week is quilting your project and the making of binding and finishing.

Who is Georgia Rogers

Rachelle and Maggie of Forever Friends Quilting have asked me to write a few words about myself and my quilting journey. Please believe me when I tell you that this for me is far more difficult than any quilt I have ever made.

My name is Georgia Rogers and I came to Strathmore upon my retirement to be with my only sister after being a military wife and travelling across Canada and Europe for 37 years. I started sewing for my 2 girls when they were young and as they grew, so did my sewing skills. For many years I sewed just about everything I wore, but I did not quilt until we moved to Nova Scotia in 1992 and I got a job in the local fabric store. It was there that I took a community quilting course so I could better understand the processes involved so I could assist my customers as this new/old craft was having a resurgence in popularity.

For the most part I am self-taught, but I have had the opportunity to learn from many talented women and have made many of these great women my friends. Quilting traditionally was a social gathering of women where they came together for ?Quilting Bees? to produce quilts for each other and their community. It allowed them to come together in a social environment to talk about different happenings in their lives and learn new skills. Although we no longer have quilting bees, the experience is alive and well in our guilds and local quilt shop classes.

I have learned many things about myself through quilting, but of the main things is that the ability to sew and create is my mental health. I love to hand embroider as well and have combined those two passions into about 5 quilts, each with their own story. I have made many quilts over the years from wall hangings to king size quilts with over 5000 pieces. I love the challenge that each quilt presents and the gratification I get in seeing my creation when it is complete.

In closing, I hope you will join me at the shop where we can learn new things together both in the classroom and through our conversations. I love to talk to people and pass on my knowledge, but I also hope that you will just stop by, and we can share and learn from each other.
